Good Shepherd
School History
In September 1968, Father Peter Kelly, Pastor of Good Shepherd Parish; Sister Virginia Mary, Principal; and Sisters Barbara Rose and Mary Paul of the Sisters of Providence (of Indiana) opened the only Catholic school on the California coast between Daly City and Santa Cruz. The school began that year with 120 primary students. In 1969, Grade 4 was added. Grades 5 and 6 and the office were added in 1970. Portables for the seventh and eighth grades were added in 1975, to make a complete elementary school.
Another dream came true when Associate Pastor, Father Adalbert Gluszek, finally had the Good Shepherd statue set in place beside the school office overlooking the ocean.
There was a major change in school administration in 1988. The Sisters of Providence were unable to continue staffing the school, and Mrs. Patricia Volan was selected as Principal to direct a completely lay faculty. With her vision and encouragement, the parish embarked on Campaign 2000 to generate funds for a kindergarten, library and computer lab.
The kindergarten was established in the fall of 1989. The computer lab and library were completed in 1990, and are now available to all students.
The summer of 1994 brought the beginning of the next phase of our growth by reconstructing the play areas in anticipation of a new multipurpose building. The multipurpose building was completed in early 1996, and another building was added that summer to make room for a science lab. For the 1999-2000 school year, the aging seventh and eighth grade portable classrooms were replaced with larger units.
Good Shepherd School continues to provide quality education to the children and families of Good Shepherd and St. Peters Parishes, as well as the local area.
